GPA to UK degree converter

Enter a US GPA on the 4.0 scale to see the UK degree class it roughly lines up with. It uses the ranges commonly quoted by advisers and is a guide, not an official conversion.

First3.7-4.0
Upper second (2:1) (your GPA)3.3-3.6
Lower second (2:2)2.7-3.2
Third2.0-2.6

A GPA between two ranges (3.6 to 3.7, 3.2 to 3.3, 2.6 to 2.7) takes the lower class, so 3.65 counts as a 2:1. For a formal comparison, use a credential evaluation service such as Ecctis in the UK or WES in the US.

A 3.45 GPA sits in the 3.3-3.6 range, usually matched to an upper second (2:1).

How it works

A US GPA and a UK classification measure different things. A GPA is a credit-weighted average of grade points on a 0 to 4.0 scale across every course you take. A UK class comes from a percentage average that is often weighted towards later years. No formula turns one into the other, but a rule-of-thumb table is widely used, and this converter applies it:

  • First: 3.7 to 4.0
  • Upper second (2:1): 3.3 to 3.6
  • Lower second (2:2): 2.7 to 3.2
  • Third: 2.0 to 2.6

How in-between values are handled

The published ranges leave gaps: nothing covers 3.61 to 3.69, 3.21 to 3.29 or 2.61 to 2.69. The converter reads your GPA to two decimal places, and each class runs from its lower bound up to the next class's lower bound. A GPA in a gap therefore takes the lower class, the same way a UK average just under 70 is a 2:1 unless your university's rounding or borderline rules lift it. Below 2.0 there is no commonly quoted equivalent, and values above 4.0 are treated as 4.0.

Worked example: Jane Doe

Jane Doe graduated from a US college with a GPA of 3.45. That sits inside the 3.3 to 3.6 range, so the converter shows a 2:1. This is the figure the converter starts with.

If her GPA were 3.65, it would sit between the 2:1 range (up to 3.6) and the First range (from 3.7). The converter places it in the lower class and still shows a 2:1, with a note that it falls in a gap. In the same way, 3.25 shows as a 2:2. Rounding down keeps the estimate on the cautious side, which matters if you are quoting it on an application.

When you need an official answer

For a visa, a professional body or an employer that wants proof, use a credential evaluation service such as Ecctis in the UK or WES in the US. If you are on an exchange or dual-degree programme, your international office may have its own agreed table. The guide to converting a GPA to a UK classification covers both directions in more detail.

Is this an official GPA conversion?

No. There is no official formula between a US GPA and a UK classification. This converter uses the rule-of-thumb ranges commonly quoted by advisers, and the result is a rough guide for judging where you stand.

What happens to a GPA between two ranges, such as 3.65?

The commonly quoted ranges leave small gaps between classes. This converter gives a GPA in a gap the lower class, so 3.65 is treated as a 2:1 rather than a First. It never rounds up into a higher class.

What about a GPA below 2.0?

The usual table stops at 2.0 for a Third, so there is no common equivalent below it. The converter says the GPA is below the Third range rather than guessing.

My university grades on a 4.3 scale. Can I still use it?

The ranges assume a 4.0 scale, so values above 4.0 are treated as 4.0. If your transcript uses a different scale, ask your university or a credential evaluation service how it compares.

Can I convert a UK classification into a GPA?

You can read the same table the other way, with the same caveats. A 2:1 lines up roughly with 3.3 to 3.6, but US admissions offices usually ask for an official evaluation rather than your own estimate.

Where can I get an official conversion?

Use a credential evaluation service. Ecctis is the UK ENIC and can issue a statement of comparability for a US degree. In the US, services such as World Education Services (WES) evaluate UK degrees.
