Bournemouth University degree calculator and rules
How Bournemouth University turns your marks into a degree class: the year weights, the rounding and the rules near a boundary, written out from the published regulations. Then try your own marks below.
Bournemouth's rules in plain English
These are estimates using the published rules. Your exam board makes the final decision.
- First year counts 0. Level 5 (second year) counts 30% and Level 6 (final year) 70%. A placement year or a foundation year counts 0, and a student who joins at Level 6 is classified on Level 6 alone (11.5).
- Every Level 5 and Level 6 unit counts: no credits are left out (11.5).
- Your aggregate within 1% of a boundary gets the higher class, so 69% is a First, 59% a 2:1, 49% a 2:2 and 39% a Third (11.5).
- Mark profile: an aggregate up to 3 marks below 70, 60 or 50 gets the higher class when at least 80 of your Level 6 credits are in it. A First from 67% with 80 final-year credits at 70%+, a 2:1 from 57% with 80 at 60%+, a 2:2 from 47% with 80 at 50%+ (11.5).
- You get whichever of the two ways gives the better class (11.5). There is no discretion below 67, 57 or 47: the exam board cannot lift a student who just misses the profile (6L Assessment Board Decision-Making Procedure, 5.13: https://newintranetsp.bournemouth.ac.uk/pandptest/6l-assessment-board-decision-making-procedure.pdf).
- An honours degree needs 360 credits, at least 100 of them at Level 6 (10.6). A unit failed at 38.0% to 39.9% on a first attempt can be compensated, up to 40 credits a level, when no element is below 36.0% and the rest of the level is passed; it keeps its real mark (7.1, 7.2).
- A reassessed element counts at no more than 40% (12.5), and a repeated unit or a failed unit carried into the next level at no more than 40% overall (12.7, 12.11). Enter those marks as capped.
Year weights by course
| Course | Each year, first to last |
|---|---|
| Three-year honours courses | 0% / 30% / 70% |
| Four-year sandwich courses with a placement year | 0% / 30% / 0% / 70% |
| Four-year courses with a foundation year | 0% / 0% / 30% / 70% |
Who this does not cover
- This is version 19.0 for 2025-26; a 2026-27 version was not published at the same address when checked.
- 6A does not say whether unit marks or the aggregate are rounded, so they are used unrounded: 68.96% is short of the 69% that the 1% rule needs.
- "Within 1% of the classification boundary" is read as 1 mark below it, from 69.0, the way 6L 5.13 reads the mark profile's "3 marks" as 67.0.
- A unit counts toward the mark profile when its own mark is at or above the higher boundary; 6A does not say the 1% rule applies to unit marks.
- Programmes with approved exceptions, such as for a professional body, follow their programme specification instead (1.3).
- Integrated masters courses (Level 5 15%, Level 6 35%, Level 7 50%, with no Third and a profile on Level 7 credits) use separate regulations and are not covered.
- Units studied on exchange or credited through RPL carry no mark, and classification uses the Bournemouth units only (1.3).
- Degree apprenticeships grade the End Point Assessment unit as 75%, 65%, 55% or 0% for the calculation, unless the standard says otherwise (11.7).

Your years and modules
Set each year's weight in your final degree, then add its modules with credits and marks.
That is a 2:1 on the usual UK boundaries, 2.1 points below a First.
Upper second (2:1)
- Year 2 (30% of result)
- 63%
- Year 3 (70% of result)
- 70%
Modules without a mark are left out. Bournemouth awards a class from 1 below its boundary, so 69 is a First. This calculator shows the weighted average only; it does not apply Bournemouth's borderline zones.

Pro applies Bournemouth's borderline rules to your marks.
Add your modules once and UniGrade Pro reruns Bournemouth's full rules every time a mark lands: the class you are on, the rule that decides it and what each class needs.
