University of Nottingham degree rules

How University of Nottingham turns your marks into a degree class: the year weights, the rounding and the rules near a boundary, written out from the published regulations. Then try your own marks below.

Nottingham's rules in plain English

These are estimates using the published rules. Your exam board makes the final decision.

  • Year weights are set in each programme specification. This uses the weights in your own UniGrade setup.
  • Module marks and your weighted average are rounded to whole numbers, with 0.5 rounding up, so 69.5 becomes 70, a First.
  • Only a rounded 69, 59 or 49 is borderline. You must be given the higher class if two thirds or more of your final-year credits are in it, or two thirds or more of your final and penultimate year credits.
  • There is no borderline between a Third and a fail.

Who this does not cover

  • These rules apply to students who entered their Qualifying year or Part I from September 2020; earlier entrants are considered under the older borderline criteria.
  • Nottingham does not publish one set of year weights, so check yours against your programme specification.
  • Programmes with professional body exemptions can differ.

Your years and modules

Set each year's weight in your final degree, then add its modules with credits and marks.

Average 63% over 120 credits
Average 70% over 120 credits
Your degree average
67.69%

That is a 2:1 on the usual UK boundaries, 2.31 points below a First.

Upper second (2:1)

Year 2 (33% of result)
63%
Year 3 (67% of result)
70%

Modules without a mark are left out. Nottingham rounds the final score to a whole number, so 69.5 counts as a First. This calculator shows the weighted average only; it does not apply Nottingham's borderline zones.
