University of Leeds degree rules

How University of Leeds turns your marks into a degree class: the year weights, the rounding and the rules near a boundary, written out from the published regulations. Then try your own marks below.

Leeds' rules in plain English

These are estimates using the published rules. Your exam board makes the final decision.

  • First year counts 0. Second and final year are weighted 1:2, a third and two thirds. A year abroad or in industry usually counts 0; where your programme counts it, it is weighted like second year.
  • Your classification average is kept to one decimal place. An average within 0.5 of the next boundary gets the higher class, so 69.5 is a First, 59.5 a 2:1 and 49.5 a 2:2.
  • There is no borderline zone or mark-profile rule for students under these regulations: the average decides.

Year weights by course

CourseEach year, first to last
Three-year honours courses0% / 33.3% / 66.7%
Four-year courses with a year abroad or in industry that does not count0% / 33.3% / 0% / 66.7%
Four-year courses with a year abroad or in industry that counts0% / 25% / 25% / 50%

Who this does not cover

  • Students who started at Leeds before 2022/23, or began their final year before 2024/25, are classified under the older Rules for Award (iteration A): the better of 1:1 and 1:2 weightings on a 0 to 10 grade scale with a 0.05 discretionary band. That scheme is not applied here.
  • Integrated masters (1:2:2) and MEng or MArch (1:1:2:2) courses are not covered.
  • Engineering Council accredited programmes also limit marginally failed credits.

Your years and modules

Set each year's weight in your final degree, then add its modules with credits and marks.

Average 63% over 120 credits
Average 70% over 120 credits
Your degree average
67.67%

That is a 2:1 on the usual UK boundaries, 2.33 points below a First.

Upper second (2:1)

Year 2 (33.33% of result)
63%
Year 3 (66.67% of result)
70%

Modules without a mark are left out. Leeds awards a class from 0.5 below its boundary, so 69.5 is a First. Leeds has no borderline rule, so the average decides.
