King's College London degree rules

How King's College London turns your marks into a degree class: the year weights, the rounding and the rules near a boundary, written out from the published regulations. Then try your own marks below.

KCL's rules in plain English

These are estimates using the published rules. Your exam board makes the final decision.

  • First year counts 0. Second and final year are weighted 2:3, which is 40/60 when each year has 120 credits. A year abroad or in industry counts 0.
  • Module marks and your final score are rounded to the nearest whole number, with 0.5 rounding up, so a score of 69.5 becomes 70, a First.
  • Within two marks of a higher class (a score of 68, 58 or 48), you are moved up automatically if at least 60 credits of your final year have marks in the higher class.
  • You need a Third or above to start with, so there is no borderline into a Third.

Year weights by course

CourseEach year, first to last
Three-year honours courses0% / 40% / 60%
Four-year courses with a year abroad or in industry0% / 40% / 0% / 60%

Who this does not cover

  • Integrated masters courses weight years 0:2:3:4 and need the 60 credits at level 7; they are not covered here.
  • MBBS, BDS and some four-year LLB degrees follow their own schemes.
  • KCL weights every credit, so a year with more or fewer than 120 credits shifts the average slightly from this estimate.

Your years and modules

Set each year's weight in your final degree, then add its modules with credits and marks.

Average 63% over 120 credits
Average 70% over 120 credits
Your degree average
67.2%

That is a 2:1 on the usual UK boundaries, 2.8 points below a First.

Upper second (2:1)

Year 2 (40% of result)
63%
Year 3 (60% of result)
70%

Modules without a mark are left out. KCL rounds the final score to a whole number, so 69.5 counts as a First. This calculator shows the weighted average only; it does not apply KCL's borderline zones.
