University of Exeter degree rules
How University of Exeter turns your marks into a degree class: the year weights, the rounding and the rules near a boundary, written out from the published regulations. Then try your own marks below.
Exeter's rules in plain English
These are estimates using the published rules. Your exam board makes the final decision.
- First year counts 0. Second and final year are weighted 1:2. With a year out in Year 3 the weights are 2:1:4, so the year out still counts.
- Module marks are whole numbers and your average is worked to two decimal places without rounding.
- A First needs 69.50%, or 68.00% with at least half of your weighted credits at 70%+.
- A 2:1 needs 59.50%, or 58.00% with half at 60%+. A 2:2 needs 49.50%, or 48.00% with half at 50%+. A Third needs 40.00%.
Year weights by course
| Course | Each year, first to last |
|---|---|
| Three-year bachelors courses | 0% / 33.3% / 66.7% |
| Four-year bachelors courses with a year out in Year 3 | 0% / 28.6% / 14.3% / 57.1% |
| Four-year integrated masters courses | 0% / 22.2% / 33.3% / 44.4% |
Who this does not cover
- "Weighted credits" is read as each module's credits weighted by its year's weight, the way the average is built.
- Courses with a year out in Year 2 or Year 4, and degree apprenticeships, use other ratios and are not covered.

Your years and modules
Set each year's weight in your final degree, then add its modules with credits and marks.
That is a 2:1 on the usual UK boundaries, 2.33 points below a First.
Upper second (2:1)
- Year 2 (33.33% of result)
- 63%
- Year 3 (66.67% of result)
- 70%
Modules without a mark are left out. Exeter awards a class from 0.5 below its boundary, so 69.5 is a First. This calculator shows the weighted average only; it does not apply Exeter's borderline zones.

Pro applies Exeter's borderline rules to your marks.
