University of Bristol degree rules

How University of Bristol turns your marks into a degree class: the year weights, the rounding and the rules near a boundary, written out from the published regulations. Then try your own marks below.

Bristol's rules in plain English

These are estimates using the published rules. Your exam board makes the final decision.

  • First year counts 0. Arts, law, social sciences and psychology weight second and final year 40/60; science, engineering, health and life sciences use 25/75. A year abroad or in industry usually counts 10%.
  • Unit marks, each year mark and the final programme mark are rounded to whole numbers before anything else, so 69.5 becomes 70, a First.
  • A final mark of 68 or 69, 58 or 59, or 48 or 49 is borderline. You get the higher class if at least half of your unit marks, weighted by credits and by year, are in the higher class or above.
  • The half is exact: 49.9% of weighted marks in the higher class is not enough.

Who this does not cover

  • Integrated masters and the non-modular Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science degrees use other weights and rules.
  • Students who registered before 2022/23 also get a check using unrounded year marks, with the better class awarded; that check is not applied here.
  • Your faculty decides your weights. If your year weights match none of the splits above, your own are used.

Your years and modules

Set each year's weight in your final degree, then add its modules with credits and marks.

Average 63% over 120 credits
Average 70% over 120 credits
Your degree average
67.2%

That is a 2:1 on the usual UK boundaries, 2.8 points below a First.

Upper second (2:1)

Year 2 (40% of result)
63%
Year 3 (60% of result)
70%

Modules without a mark are left out. Bristol rounds the final score to a whole number, so 69.5 counts as a First. This calculator shows the weighted average only; it does not apply Bristol's borderline zones.
