University of Bath degree rules

How University of Bath turns your marks into a degree class: the year weights, the rounding and the rules near a boundary, written out from the published regulations. Then try your own marks below.

Bath's rules in plain English

These are estimates using the published rules. Your exam board makes the final decision.

  • First year counts 0. Second year counts 32% and the final year 68%. A standard placement or study abroad year counts 0.
  • Unit marks are rounded to whole numbers; your overall course average is worked to two decimal places and is not rounded up to a boundary.
  • A First needs an average of 70.00%, or 68.00% with unit marks of 70% or more in at least 30 final-year credits.
  • The same applies one class down: a 2:1 from 58.00% with 30 final-year credits at 60%+, and a 2:2 from 48.00% with 30 credits at 50%+.
  • An average from 38.00% up to 40% gives Unclassified Honours rather than a fail.

Year weights by course

CourseEach year, first to last
Three-year full-time courses0% / 32% / 68%
Four-year courses with a standard placement or study abroad year0% / 32% / 0% / 68%
Four-year courses with an enhanced placement or study abroad year0% / 24% / 8% / 68%

Who this does not cover

  • Integrated masters (0/16/34/50) and thin-sandwich courses use other weights and are not covered.
  • Some courses publish different weights in their course specification.
  • Promotion for individual mitigating circumstances is decided by the board and is not modelled.

Your years and modules

Set each year's weight in your final degree, then add its modules with credits and marks.

Average 63% over 120 credits
Average 70% over 120 credits
Your degree average
67.76%

That is a 2:1 on the usual UK boundaries, 2.24 points below a First.

Upper second (2:1)

Year 2 (32% of result)
63%
Year 3 (68% of result)
70%

Modules without a mark are left out. Bath does not round up to a boundary, so a First needs 70.00. This calculator shows the weighted average only; it does not apply Bath's borderline zones.
